Boot Camp 2010 is much more than an opportunity to build your networks and gain an overarching understanding of the business of books.

Our workshop program is designed to address some of the specific issues independent publishers (including authors choosing to go it alone) will face as they pursue a career in the business of books. Delegates can attend up to two of the following four workshop streams.

* All workshop information is subject to ongoing revision.

Commissioning, editing & proofreading

Presented by Sally Collings

There's more to a published book than meets the eye. Firstly, there's the commissioning of what we all hope will be a bestselling title, and then there are critical but unseen factors of editing and proofreading the manuscript. In this workshop Sally Collings will draw on over 20 years of book publishing experience and distill exactly what goes through a publisher's mind when commissioning a title, what to expect when a book goes to a copy editor, and the importance of having a proofreader bring a fresh persepctive to the text.

This workshop isn't about writing a book or self-editing your manuscript. It is about the process of commissioning, editing and proofreading a manuscript from the perspective of being an independent publisher. Authors will be challenged to reconsider everything they know about self-publishing, while aspiring indie publishers will gain a first-hand understanding of the manuscript development process.

Design & typesetting

Presented by Gayna Murphy

Award winning book designer Gayna Murphy will give an exclusive insight into just what makes a good book cover great. How do you achieve that magic combination of type, colour and images that says to a reader, 'pick me up and buy me'?

Gayna will discuss which design elements work, which don't, and explain the intricacies of internal page layout while demystifying design jargon.

Marketing & author profile development

Presented by Joanna Penn

Getting a book to print is the relatively easy bit. Getting it into the hands of readers is another thing entirely.

In this workshop, indie publishing guru Joanna Penn will uncover the secrets of book marketing on a budget using a distinctly DIY ethos. Joanna will give you her tips and tricks for building an effective online author platform using social media technologies like blogging, Twitter, Facebook and podcasting.

Distribution & ebooks

Presented by Robert Collings

Most authors and publishers want to see their books in not just their local bookstore but also the national chains. Entertainment industry expert Robert Collings will explain just how to achieve this, while also challenging the assumption that an indie publisher would want to do it at all.

He will also apply over 20 years of music industry and retail expertise to the issue of ebooks, distribution on a global scale and integrating emerging opportunities in print-on-demand into your business strategy.
